At the moment of his second inauguration and only weeks before his assassination, President Lincoln is depicted with his right hand on the Bible repeating the oath of office after Chief Justice Chase. Between them two private secretaries, John Hay and John G. Nicolay, stand witness.

Lincoln’s involvement with the Battle of Fort Stevens, an American Civil War battle, on July 12, 1864, was the only time in American history in which a sitting president came under fire from an enemy combatant.
